Rev. Fred Shuttlesoworth: The Last of the Big 3

Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth died today. He was one of the "Big 3" along with Rev. Martin Luther King Jr and Rev. Ralph Abernathy who spurred on the civil rights movement for Black Americans.

Dec. 25, 1956: A Ku Klux Klan bomb explodes between the church and the parsonage where Shuttlesworth slept, collapsing the house on top of him. Shuttlesworth walks away, and preaches that it was a miracle.

The story of Mississippi and the American South will always include the story of the civil rights movement of the 1960's. What we may soon forget is the religious convictions that inspired the movement (and not the vice versa).
